  大学英语六级作文练习:一颗开放的心

  An Open Heart

my aunt edith was a widow of 50, working as a secretary, when doctors discovered what was then thought to be a very serious heart ailment.aunt edith doesn accept defeat easily.

she began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon, dr. michael debakey, of houston, texas. he had saved the life of someone with the same ailment. the article said dr. debakey fees were very high; aunt edith couldn possibly pay them. but could he tell her of someone whose fee she could pay?so aunt edith wrote to him. she simply listed her reasons for wanting live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four more years, her little-girl dream of traveling and seeing the world.

there wasn a word of self-pity---only warmth and humor and the joy of living. she mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.a few days later, my doorbell rang. aunt edith didn wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud: our beautiful letter moved me very deeply. if you can come to houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation. signedichael debakey.

that was seven years ago. since then, aunt edith has been around the world. her three children are happily married. for her age, she is one of the youngest, most alive people i know----all because of an open heart surgeon who knew how to honor of his profession, and how to open his own heart.

  大学英语六级作文练习:为什么尊重是很重要?

  Why Respect Is Important?

Why respect is importantgoing back in time, respect played an important role in survival. if we think of a small tribe wandering in the desert,we can imagine that a person not respected by anyone could be left behind and die. such a person was considered to have no worth, no importance, no value to the group.

This, i believe is the foundation of our psychological need to feel respected.

Nowadays it seems much more possible to survive without being respected. someone could, for example, inherit a large sum of money, have many servants and employees and have salesmen constantly calling on him and catering to him,yet not be respected in the least. someone could also make a lot of money through having a particular talent which is valued, such as being able to dunk a basketball yet not really be respected, perhaps because of the way he treats others.

Still, there is a value to respect which money can't buy.

Though someone's life might not depend on it, there are times, many times in fact, when another person has the chance to make a personal decision--a judgment call. when that person feels sincere respect for someone else, they will make a different decision than if they feel no respect, even if they have customarily shown a false, pseudo-respect to the person.

In summary, it is for both evolutionary and practical reasons that respect is important, and also why we simply feel better when we are respected.

  大学英语六级作文练习:领导力

  Leadership

what is leadership?its qualities are difficult to define. but they are not so difficult to identify. leaders don ' t force other people to go along with them. they bring them along.

leaders get commitment from others by giving it themselves, by building an environment that encourages creativity, and by operating with honesty and fairness.

good leaders aren' t"lone rangers. "they recognize that an organization' s strategies for success require the combined talents and efforts of many people. leadership is the catalyst for transforming those talents into results.

successful leaders are emotionally and intellectually oriented to the future--not wedded to the past. they have a hunger to take responsibility, to innovate, andto initiate. they are not content with merely taking care of what' s already there. they want to move forward to create something new.

leaders provide answers as well as direction, offer strength as well as dedication, and speak from experience as well as understanding of the problems they face and the peopie they work with.

leaders are flexible rather than dogmatic. they believe in unity rather than yielding. and they strive to achieve agreements out of conflict. leadership is all about getting people consistently to give their best, helping them to grow to their fullest potential, and motivating them to work toward a common good. leaders make the right things happen when they're supposed to.

a good leader, an effective leader, is one who has respect. respect is something you have to have in order to get.a leader who has respect for other people at all levels of an organization, for the work they do, and for their abilities, desires and needs, will find that respect is returned. and all concerned will be motivated to work together.
